Coach Kelly Passes Away
Mar. 24th - Former UNB Athletics Director and Varsity Hockey Coach, Peter 'Pete' Kelly passed away on Monday. Pete coached UNB for 20 years, from 1947/48 to 1967/68. In that time the team UNB won 3 MIAU titles ('60, '62 & '64), their first since 1934, and a Bronze at the 2nd CIAU Nationals in Kingston ('64). The team also captured one MIAU-NB title ('48), 9 MIAU-NB/PEI titles ('49, '50, '52, '57, '58, '60, '62, '63, '64), one York County Intermediate Hockey League title ('49) and one Central NB Senior title ('59).
Pete won two Stanley Cups with Detroit during his professional career, 1936 & 1937.
A quick fact, the AUS (when it was the AUAA) named the East Division after Peter in 1985 when the league returned to using two divisons. The other division was named MacAdam after AJ. MacAdam who coached hockey at St. Dunstan's (now UPEI) in the 50's and 60's and was later the athletic director at SDU.
