USPORTS All-Stars in America

The 2023 bi-annual World University Winter Games, also called 'Winter Universiade', was hosted by Lake Placid, New York. Due to a shortage of ice hockey rinks in the Lake Placid area - the men's and women's hockey games would be played in surounding communities with the Medal games being played in Lake Placid at Herb Brooks Arena.

The games ran 12 days from January 11th to 22nd, 2023. The hockey competition would be comprised of two groups with the top 2 from each pool advancing to the medal rounds. Pool A, which was comprised of Canada, Ukraine, Czechia, Latvia, Sweden and Japan, would play their round-robin games at Roos House Arena in Canton, New York, on the campus of SUNY (State University of New York) Canton - 2 hours north-west of Lake Placid. Pool B would include U.S.A., Kazakhstan, Slovakia, Hungary, South Korea and Great Britain, who would play at Maxcy Hall in Potsdam, New York, on the campus of SUNY Potsdam (23 minutes east of Canton - on the way to Lake Placid).

Previous Results - 3x Bronze

  • In 2015 (Granada, Spain), Team Canada (Canada West All-Stars) were 3rd. They won their pool as well as their Quarter-final game, but lost to eventual champion Russia 3-2OT in the Semi-finals. They won bronze with a 6-2 win over Czech Republic.
  • In 2017 (Almaty, Kazakhstan), Team Canada (OUA All-Stars) were 3rd. They won their pool as well as their Quarter-final game, but lost again to eventual chamnpion Russia 4-1 in their Semi-final game. They won bronze with a 4-3 win over Czech Republic.
  • In 2019 (Krasnoyarsk, Russia), Team Canada (USPORTS All-stars) were 3rd, for the 3rd straight time. Canada was second in their pool to Kazakhstan. They lost to Russia, for the 3rd straight time, in the Semi-finals, but bounced back with a 3-0 redemption win over Kazakhstan in the Bronze game.
  • 2019 Team Canada

The 2019 team was orignally slated to be comprised of AUS All-Stars, but with the event schedule from March 1st to 12th (between the AUS Semi-Finals and Finals) the conference informed USPORTS, in the summer of 2018, that they would not be assmbling a team. USPORTS developed a plan where they would take the best available players from teams that were not going to advance to the playoffs in an effort to avoid causing any disruption to USPORTS hockey playoffs.

  • In 2021 (Lucerne, Switzerland) the event did not take place due to COVID. Originally scheduled for January 21st-31st, 2021, it was posponed in August 2020 and then reschedule (pushed out) to December 2021. In mid-November 2021 the host committee cancelled the event due to Swiss government travel restrictions.

Team Canada 2023 & Coach Mac

The 2023 roster for Team Canada was again a USPORTS All-star team, but this team would be led by UNB Reds Head Coach Gardiner MacDougall. Gardiner was going to lead and coach the 2019 team prior to the event being cancelled and accepted the offer to step into the same role for 2023. Gardiner is also the last coach to lead Canada to gold (2013). Joining the coaching staff would be Calgary Dinos head coach Mark Howell, who returns as General Manager, helping MacDougall with team selection ahead of the Games. Additionally, Western's Clarke Singer, uOttawa's Patrick Grandmaitre, Queen's Brett Gibson and U of Toronto's Ryan Medel will serve as assistant/video coaches. UNB's Ryan Sweeny joins as athletic therapist with Saskatchewan's Cord Ivanco the group's equipment manager.
