UNB reached out for a permanent coach and hired Halifax native Mike Johnston, who had been a Co-Coach at University of Calgary. He replaced at least 16 players from the previous year and brought in some fine prospects in local boy Rob Boldon (back from the Ottawa 67's), Brian Clark, Tom Gemmell, Steve Kippen, Ken Murchison, Dominic Niro, Murray Nystrom, Serge Ouimette and Mike Sutherland. UNB got off to a good start in the playoffs, knocking off UPEI 3-1 at home on two goals by Tom Gemmell and a shorthanded tally by Murray Nystrom, but the Island team came back to win the series with an 8-2 triumph at home. (clarification: the 1st round of playoffs were a best of three (H-V-H), UNB lost game two on the road 6-3 and game three, at home, 6-2. note: STU was also playing game three of their series, on the road versus Moncton, on Sunday and also lost. This ended the university hockey season in Fredericton - local fans had been hoping for a UNB/STU matchup in the MacAdam Division final, but to no avail. These double loses on Sunday resulted in the day being marked locally in college hockey circles as 'Black Sunday').
