Mike Johnston was back in charge with UNB in the AUAA. He had most of his best players back from 89-90, but he did lose Jamie Lehman (Sweden), Brian Clark, Serge Ouimette and Mike Sutherland who had been strong performers. Only a few new players were added, with Troy Binnie, Joey McTamney, Clyde Simmons and Karl Taylor being strong newcomers. Binnie only played ten games (5-5) and opted to return to the Ottawa 67's (OHL).

The Red Devils got off to a fine start (6-2-3), but finished off 6-9 in their last 15 games to finish 12-11-3 for third place in the MacAdam Division just ahead of St. Thomas (10-14-2). UNB had a 3-0-1 record against STU that more than made a difference in the standings.

The Devils got solid goaltending from Chris Somers and Scott MacDonald, but couldn't score as much as the stronger teams. Nobody made the top ten scorers, but Tom Gemmell (18-19) was close. Good seasons were had by Murray Nystrom (9-21), Joey McTamney (10-17), Ken Murchison (10-15) and Jamie Colvin (12-8), while Rob Boldon (3-16) was tops in defense.

In the playoffs UNB tangled with University of Moncton and surprised UDM with a 6-2 win in games one, paced by Joey McTamney with a pair of goals and assists and a a three point night (1-2) by Murray Nystrom; Game two resulted in a 5-4 win by Moncton, so the two teams had to play overtime to decide the series and it took 48 minutes of overtime before UDM got the big goal. Murray Nystrom had a pair of goals in this one and goalie Chris Somers picked up an assist for the second straight game.

Ernie Fitsimmons, The History of Hockey in Fredericton: Volume 4 (pg. 198)

(note: in a cost saving measure, the first round of the AUAA playoffs was a best of two(2) at the higher seed's rink. If the series was tied after two games - a ten(10) minute game three would be played immediatly after game two. If game three ended in a tie, the ice would be cleaned and it would go to 20min OT periods until a team won the mini-game and the series. UdeM scored with 2min left in the second 20-min OT period, 10-20-18=48 on top of the 60min already played for a total of 108min).
