UNB had Don MacAdam back as coach with Jerry Kelly as his assistant. The Red Devils had lost several players from their 10-10 team of 1980-81, with the biggest losses being leading scorers Sid Veysey (37), George Wood (33) and Brian Craig (33). MacAdam was able to add several local players like Mark Jeffrey, Mike David, Paul Murphy and Andy Slipp, but his most impressive additions were former Pro defeseman Dave Mancuso along with George and Mike Kelly. The team gave up over four goals per game and didn't reach the playoffs, but did have some All-Stars in Dave Mancuso and Gary Agnew on the 1st Team, plus Scott Brogan, Dave Bluteau and John Kinch on the 2nd Team. An unfortunate incident occured when rugged local defenseman John Benson broke the C1 vertabrae in his neck in an exhibition game against the Senior Capitals and was out for the season.
