Don MacAdam was back as coach of UNB, ably assisted by Tom Coolen and Jerry Kelly. They had to replace offensive power Gary Agnew, John Kinch, Mark Jeffrey and Tony MacLean, but their top recruits were defenseman Scott Clements and Kurt Rugenius. Mark Welton tried out with Guelph (OHL) but later returned to play with UNB.

By Christmas the Red Devils were 8-11 to rank sixth in teh AUAA and never really got untracked finishing with a 10-14-0 record and out of the playoffs. They could have reached the .500 mark, but two heart-breaking late season 3-2 losses to St. Thomas caused them to fail. They beat the Tommies 7-4 in their only other meeting.
