UNB coach Don MacAdam had most of the 15-11-1 team back and hopes were high for a strong season. Gone were Craig Crawford, Ed Pinder, Dave Wright, Kevin Daley, Rick Doucette, Rod Pike and Dave kent, while newcomers were Tony MacLean, Jim Somers, Al Lewis, Jim Wooder, Steve Nimmo, Marcell Pineau and Phil Strang.
The Devils got off to a strong 3-0 start with wins over Memroail (2) and Dalhousie and were 6-3 in their first nine, including two wins over STU. Then the wheels came off and they dropped siz in a row in whcih they were outscored 35-17. During the Christmas break UNB players got a treat by touring Europe where they had a 4-2 record.

An 8-1 win over STU, after Tommies forward Pat Garagan stated publicly that UNB were not that strong, gave them a 4-0 record over their local rivals, which helped a bit, but a 10-10-1 record would have to be classed a disappointment. Of the new players, only Tony MacLean (7-9) scored well, but he ranked ninth on the team scoring list. To show that some things never change, UNB got a league high 77 minutes in a game vs STU.

Gary Agnew (19-26) finished fifth in points for the MacAdam Division, while Sid Veysey (17-20), Brian Craig (16-17) and George Wood (14-19) also ranked in the top ten. John Kinch led the team with 85 penalty minutes but only had a disappointing 11-14-25 points. When the All-Stars were picked, only goalie Kevin Rochford and centre Sid Veysey got the node for UNB.

The same sudden-death playoff setup was back, but this time UNB advanced by shutting out St. Mary's 4-0. They didn't advance far as University of Moncton beat them 8-5 to end the season. George Wood had two goals in the loss. Although only playing two playoff games, both Wood (3-3) and Sid Veysey (0-5) ranked among the playoff point leaders. Moncton went on to win the AUAA title and then went 3-0 at the Nationals.
