During the hockey off-season St. Thomas University announced its withdrawl from the AUAA to concentrate on exhigition games because they were not competitive anymore (1-39 in their last 40 games). UNB lost some key players in Larry Wood, Mike Kohler, Danny Gill and Alan Archibald, but added Fredericton rookies Mike Barry, Charlie Bird, Mark Rickard and Dave Neill along with goalie Phil Jones, Jim Matheson, Gary Perry, Bill Loughery, Dave Kent and Jerry Kelly (8-5-13) and Charlie Bird (5-7) were the best of the rookies offensively, while Dave Neill led the team with 94 penalty minutes. UNB never got rolling and had a 5-11 record to finsh out the playoffs again. They refused to play the players brought in from outside the Maritimes and paid a dear price. Only Doug MacDonald (2-14) managed a point-per-game, just ahead of Gerry Grant (5-9). Ernie Fitsimmons, The History of Hockey in Fredericton: Volume 3
