UNB were looking forward to their first season in the new Aitken Centre with great hope. They had lost some good players in John MacLean, Charlie Bird, Gerry Grant, Doug MacDoanld, Bill Loughery, Don Kinsman and John Hawkes from their 5-11 team in 1975-75.

The Red Devils brought in starry Junior goalie Bobby Jones from Saint John, along with J.J. McInnis, Gerry Goodine, Phil Handrahan, Gord Tufts, Kevin Daley, Rod Pike, Dave Wright and others to plug the gaps.

Their first game in the Aitken Centre was an exhibition game that they tied against Dalhousie 5-5, as Bobby Jones excelled in goal, but the next night they fell 8-6 to the same team.

The Devils started the season on the road against UPEI and were beaten twice, then dropped an aweful 10-2 decision to the import laden St. Mary's team in their first offical home game at the Aitken Centre.

Hopes got higher, when in their fourth game the Devils played well in defeating Acadia 7-4, but that would be their only win in their worst ever season (1-19) in University action. On the last road trip they fell 8-1 to first place St. F.X. but the topper was losing 11-0 to Dalhousie (6-13-1), who ranked sixth of the eight teams.

The Red Devils averaged over six goals against per game and were last in goals (55). Dave Kent was the only scorer to do quite well, as he managed 9-14-23 in 20 games. Bob McSorley did record 2-8-10 in nine games while Dave Neill (2-7 in 12 games) registered 81 penality minutes, just behind the 86 recorded by Kevin Daley. Mike Barry got so frustrated at losing that he joined the Junior Red Wings.
