UNB lost some key scorers in Bob Keefe, Greg Holst (turned pro with NY Rangers), Brian Tapp and Gord Tufts, as well as defensemen Don MacAdam and john MacRae.

For the first time, coach Bill MacGillivary delved heavily into out of town players. From Charlottetown Colonel Gray they brought in Gerry McCarron and Carl Trainor, along with Chatham's John Hawkes (Merrimack), Len Hurcan (Michigan Tech), Gord Shipley (Bishops), Bob Nagge, Bruce Dunville (Moncton) and Glen Fisher (Montreal). Danny Gill was back after a year away from university.

The Red Devils stumbled along winning one and losing one until mid-January when they went on a 6-3-1 tear to finish second in teh Northern Division (11-8-1) behind Moncton. They played STU for times and won all four (5-0, 10-4, 7-2 and 11-1).

Gord Hubley played nearly every game in goal (11-7-1), while local player John MacLean played the other. UNB didn't have anybody among the top twenty scorers, but relied on their depth. Team captain Larry Wood (12-17), Danny Gill (11-16), Glen Fsiher (13-11), Gerry Bell (9-15), Doug MacDonald (5-17) and rugged blueliner Mike Kohler (4-16) all managed a point per game, while Gerry McCarron (85 minutes) and Bell (81) joined Kohler (89) in providing some new found grit.

UNB edged UPEI out of a playoff spot by beating them 4-0 in late February and it marked the first time in the playoffs since 1969-70. Going into the playoffs they would be without Gord Shipley (suspended) and Bob Nagge (torn knee ligaments).

the Red Devils were up against the juggernaut from St. Mary's (19-2) in the opener and got out shot 58-14 in losing 7-0. There was no consolation game this season, so it was one game and out after battling hard all season for a playoff spot. Larry wood receved the Corbett Medal as the top Make Athlete at UNB.
