UNB coach Bill MacGillivary lost a few players from the 7-11 team of 1971-72, the most serious of which were goalie Keith Lelievre, Phil Lepage, Karl Parks and Danny Gill. They used several local players in Gerry Grant, Charlie Miles and Gord Tufts along with Gerry Bell and Doug MacDonald from PEI, Steve Benoit (Loyola University), backup goalie Ross Everett and Mike Kohler of St. Andrews. The Red Devils got off to a 2-0-2 start before settling into a 50-50 season where they finally finished sixth with a 9-9-2 record. Western teams only played the Eastern squads once and UNB ended up playing St. Thomas four times. Since the Tommies finished 1-19, the four wins over STU (5-0, 8-3, 8-6, 11-1) made their final record deceptive. Greg Holst waited until the sixth game before he started to assert himself by scoring two goals against STU and he later had six, four and three tallies in the other STU games. Holst finished with 22-11-33 and his goal total was third best in the league. No other UNB player managed a point-pre-game and the season was doomed when Bob Keeffe (4-6 in 7 games) suffered a broken arm vs St. Mary's January 7th. Rookies Gerry Bell (7-10) and Steve Benoit (5-11) showed promise, as did big defenseman Mike Kohler (4-9). Gord Hubley played every game in goal, with his best game vs Mt.A when he faced 59 shots in a 2-2 overtime tie. Ernie Fitsimmons, The History of Hockey in Fredericton: Volume 3
