The University of New Brunswick had Bill MacGillivary back as coach with Jim Morell as an assistant. They had few losses from the previous season and added Greg Holst, Larry Wood, Brian Tapp and Alan Archibald, while Tom Gamblin moved up from the JV team. The Red Devils got off to a tough start when they dropped overtime games to both St.F.X (4-2) and Dalhousie (6-4) on their first road trip, despite heroic work by Keith Lelievre who faced 103 shots. Two losses to St. Thomas (5-3 and 7-5) didn't help and the team limped along with a 7-11 record. Highlight of the season was beating St.F.X 7-5 at home on three goals by Phil Lepage. Bob Keeffe also had a hat-trick and Phil Lepage got his second, scoring all three goals in a 9-3 loss to St. Mary's. Over the eighteen game season, Bob Keeffe (11-21-32) and Phil Lepage (17-11-28) excelled, while secondary scoring was provided by Karl Parks (6-11), Brian Tapp (4-12) and Greg Holst (7-8), who showed great promise with four goals in his last six games. Only twice did the Red Devils out-shoot their opponents, so goalies Keith Lelievre and Gord Hubley were hardley to blame. Ernie Fitsimmons, The History of Hockey in Fredericton: Volume 3
