The University of New Brunswick made a drastic move in replacing longtime Coach Pete Kelly with Bill MacGillivary, a former player. There was the usual big turnover and newcomers including Don MacIntyre and John Sheppard on defense, Lon Mullin, Geoff Sedgwick, Duncan MacDonald and Darin Bird up front. The Devils got off to a 1-4 start, but then turned it around and finished 9-7 to force their way into the Championship tournament in Moncton in early March. Only Herb Madill (17-17) finished among the leading scorers (5th), as Marty Winslow fell off to 6-13-19. The Devils beat St. Thomas 5-1 and 4-2 to make up for last season. Defenseman Ron Loughery was injured and unable to play for the title at Moncton. St. F.X. were 15-1 during the season, but had their hands full with UNB in game one. The Devils were tied 1-1 after two periods on a goal by Herb Madill, but Fredericton resident Mickey Oja scored the winner in the third period. St.F.X won it all but were 0-2 at Nationals. It isn't much consolation to win the Consolation game, but UNB got back at Acadia for beating them twice during the season with a 6-3 thrashing. Herb Madill had two goals and Al Andrews chipped in with a goal and three helpers. Madill got 20 goals for the year, nearly one quarter of the UNB offense and was in on nearly fifty percent of their markers. Don MacIntyre was a Second Team All-Star defenseman and Herb Madill won the William Laskey Award as the top hockey player for UNB. Ernie Fitsimmons, The History of Hockey in Fredericton: Volume 2
