UNB had a big changeoverm with John Wrigley, Mike Currie, Charlie McCluskey, Bob Naylor, Claude MacKinnon, Jeff Leach, Darrell Leblanc, Dave Peterson, Jack Drover and Bill Meehan all playing elsewhere. To fill in the gaps the Red Devils still counted on local players for help, with goalie Mark Jacobsen, Gary Jones, Ed Grant and Ted Loughery, who all played minor hockey in Fredericton. Other newcomers were goalie Ted Bird, Jim Grant, Boyd Legallis, Allan Jeffreys, Ed Russell, Alan Andrews and Carmen Hudson. During exhibitions before the regular season, UNB split two games, beating the Junior Red Wings 7-5 and losing to STU 6-5, but got a rude awakening when they were shutout 8-0 by Boston University. UNB got off to a solid start with a 5-2-1 record that included a 4-4 tie with STU, but a pair of early February losses to Mount A. and St. Dunstan's basically ended their chances of finishing first and they ended up third with a 9-4-1 record. Marty Winslow (8-20) finished sixth in league scoring, while Ed Grant (8-10 in 10 games), Austin Duquette (8-9) and Ed Russell (8-6) were their main scoring threats. Mark Jacobsen had an 8-3-1 record with a 3.79 average in his rookie season. Ernie Fitsimmons, The History of Hockey in Fredericton: Volume 2
