UNB predicted that they would have 2400 students by 1966;

UNB had some holes to fill after being Maritime finalist in 1956-57. The major loss was superstar scorer Bill McDonagh, along with Bill stewart, Ed Dohaney, Ted McElmam, Don Hersey and goalie Claude Brown.

Coach Pete Kelly brought in some strong replacements in Don Morrow, Bob Soward, Tom Jarrett, Pete Chalmers, John Sears, Currie McCarthy, Dave Beardsley, Glen Mowatt and Andy Lightle, new goalies were John Bassett, Lyman Lynch and Hal Hicks, as UNB started bringing in more Upper Canadian players to try and compete with St. FX.

They played an exhibition schedule that saw them lose three games to the Senior Capitals and attend a tournament hosted by RPI University in Troy, N.Y. while waiting for Intercollegiate playoffs to begin. In the ten exhibitions Don Morrow (7-8-15), Bob Soward (2-10-12), Pete Coombes (7-4-11), Ed McLellan (8-1-9) and Galen Parent (3-4-7 with a team leading 49 penalty minutes) were the best.

St. Thomas didn't compete in University playoffs this year, so a round-robin was held with Mt. A and St. Dunstan's to eliminate one team. UNB finished 3-1 and joined Mt. A in the Western final. Soward and Coombes each had five goals in the round-robin.

UNB went into Sackville and beat Mt.A 4-2 in game one of the total-goals series, as Pete Coombes had two goals, Don Morrow and Currie McCarthy one each. Back home things got really tense, when Mt. A topped the locals 5-3 to tie the series 7-7, so overtime had to be played to determine a winner. Pete Beardsley became the hero as he scored the overtime winner and Bob Soward shared honours with the tying goal in the third period with goalie John Bassett pulled. Harry Sterling was the Mt. A goalie.

For years St. F.X. were unbeatable at home and usually won the Maritime title, but UNB threw a monkey wrench into the series when they went into Antigonish and tied the perennial winners 5-5. John Bassett blocked 46 shots while Don Keenan of St. F.X. stopped 26. Five different goals scores counted for the Red Devils, including powerplay tallies by Currie McCarthy and Galen Parent.
There was a big crowd at the Beaverbrook rink as UNB had a chance for the title, but St. F.X. blasted 48 shots at Bassett and came out on top 5-3. Pete Mockler, Tom Jarrett and Galen Parent scored the losers' goals, but St. F.X. got two on a powerplay of their own when Hedley Savoy was off. Leading scorers in the ten playoff games were: Don Morrow (4-10-14), Pete Mockler (4-9-13), Pete Coombes (8-4-12), Bob Soward (7-4-11) and Galen Parent (4-4-8).
