UNB Coach Pete Kelly had a big rebuilding job to do with the Red Devils. From the 0-6 team of 1955-56, he had goalie Claude Brown, defenseman Hedley Savoy plus top scorers Jim McNutt, Peter Coombes and Pete Mockler back.

Newcomers brought in on defense were John Benson Sr., Galen Parent, Jim Fraser (6'7", 290) and Ed Dohaney and Bill Stewart were added.

The biggest problem was that UNB had no league to play in and embarked on a series of exhibition games (1-4-2) before getting involved in a Round-Robin Intercollegiate playoff with Mt. A, St. Thomas and St. Dunstan's.

UNB came to life and breezed through the playoffs with a 6-0 record to take the Western Title. They outscored opponents 39-11 with Bill McDonagh (11-10-21) topping all scores. Bill Stewart (5-7) was the next highest scorer.

The Red Devils now faced perennial Maritime champions St. F.X. in a two-game total-goal series. IN the first game at home Peter Coombes scored to make the count 1-1 after one and another by Mockler saw UNB with a chance trailing 302 after two. A power-play goal by Ed Dohaney got the locals tied, but St. F.X. got the last two goals for a 5-3 win.

The return game was no contest, as St. F.X. ran away with the game 10-3. Galen Parent had two goals and Ed Dohaney one against former Boston Bruins goalie Don Keenan, as the Eastern teams were much more into luring outside players than the Western squads.

Still, it was quite a step from an 0-6 team to winning the NB/PEI title and some good young prospects gave promise of a good future for UNB.

Ernie Fitsimmons, The History of Hockey in Fredericton: Volume 2 (pg. 107-109)

(note 1: Don Keenan had yet to play for Boston. After his 3-year career with St. F.X. he returned to Toronto and was helping the St. Michael's Majors when visiting Boston needed an emergancy call up for a game vs Toronto on March 7, 1959. Toronto won 4-1.)

(note 2: Bill McDonagh had played 4 games for the Rangers-NHL and 61 for New Haven-AHL in 1949-50. He had left the pro ranks and had been playing in different senior leagues before making his way to Fredericton and to UNB.)
