UNB Coach, Peter Kelly, lost Dave Inch, Richard Clark, Don Wells and Frank Barteaux from last years finalists, but added John Wrigley (goal), Garnet Stairs, Ed Grant, Jim Morell, Jack Drover, Austin Duquette, Cy Miller and Doug Cain. He had good luck with locals, as Cain, Grant, Morell and Stairs were developed in Fredericton.

To prepare for the season, UNB played several games against U.S. Colleges, tying Boston University 5-5 and 2-2 and Colby College 5-5. A second game against Colby was cancelled because of the John F. Kennedy assasination to days earlier.

UNB fell behind 3-0 to Acadia in their season opener and lost 3-1. They then reeled off wins that were interupted only by a loss to St. Thomas in Chatham. Darrell Leblanc finished seventh in the league scoring (16-7-23), just ahead of David Peterson (11-10-21). Roland Belliveau suffered a broken right leg against St. Mary's in February and was gone for the year.

Intercollegiate moguls decided that the team that finished first during the regular season would go to the Nationas. UNB battled St.F.X for the top spot all year, but won out because they had beaten X 6-2 in Antigonish in their only meeting, the first time in seventeen years UNB had one there. In a rebuilding year, it was the third Maritime title in five years for the Devils.

For the Nationals UNB was allowed to use Richard Clark, a fifth year player who had been with the Capitals all season. In the opener, UNB got goals from Jack Drover, Dave Peterson and Ed Grant against Alberta, but it wasn't enough, as the Devils were outshot 31-19 and fell 5-3.

In the Consolation tilt it was UNB over University of Montreal 8-6, with Garnet Stairs, Bob Naylor and Ed Grant all scoring twice. Richard Clark and Jack Drover each earned two assists in that one, with Ken Marchant adding a goal and two helpers.

When All-Star selections came around, Ed Hospodar was again a second selection, while UNB had John Wrigley on the First team and Darrell Lebanc on the Second Squad.

Ernie Fitsimmons, The History of Hockey in Fredericton: Volume 2 (pg. 204)

(Note: Three UNB players were named to the Nationals first-team All-Stars; Jack Drover on Defence, Ed Grant and Darryll Lebanc up front. Ken Marchant was voted to the second-team. .
