1996/97 Year End Write-up and Stats

Schedule | Playoffs | Nationals | Gallery

The 1996-97 season saw a hockey team evolve from a group of players trying to identify their roles as individuals, into a closely knit team that cared very much for each other and the goals they set out to achieve together. This group of people decided very early that they were prepared to sacrifice a great deal during preparation as well as during competition to reach these goals. The common threads were:
  1. They were all committed to the task at hand.
  2. They all felt they could trust one another.
  3. They all cared about each other and they showed it.
The team's improvement came in the form of baby steps early on in the year as success was measured very carefully and in different forms. The players were challenged continuously to raise their standard in many areas... and they responded. The recurring theme this season was the way the players responded to the demands placed upon them. The demands were carefully thought out among the coaching staff and the unanimous consensus was that the players were either capable of reaching this standard for their first time, or they had been at that level before and needed to be reminded to strive for it.

The team continued to improve and come together as the year went along and the players began to believe in themselves. As this process continued, confidence became a major factor and the team continued to win. The playoffs were very successful and say the team win an AUAA championship for the first time since 1984 and continue along to compete for the national championship in the final game of the Canadian university hockey season. Although the team lost a heart breaker to Guelph (4-3), they set a new standard for UNB Hockey in the future.
