Danny Grant had oft (sp) injured Brad Shepard and Shane Easter as his two assistants with University of New Brunswick. They had to put up with a dozen changes, including losing Derek Cormier, Todd Sparks, Kelly Reed, Rob Knesaurek, Mike Cavanaugh, Karl Taylor and Jason Underhill.

Strong UNB newcomers up front were Jeff Andrews, Jason Campeau and Dax MacLean, plus Trevor Boland was back from a year off in Newfoundland Senior. Fine new defensemen were Kayle Short and Chris Zanutto, while Larry McMorran gave the Reds some local flavor, as did Jeff Grant after Christmas.

Bill Wright (16-30) finished sixth in league scoring, but there was a balanced attack behind him featuring: Dax MacLean (17-19), Toby Burkitt (15-20), Jeff Andrews (17-15), Jason Campeau (16-13), Trevor Boland (14-10) and Chris Peach (13-11). Rookie defenseman Kayle Short (2-19) and Chris Zanutto (5-15) produced right away and Short led the team with 90 penalty minutes. Frankie Leblanc was a workhorse in goal, yeilding only 20 minutes of playing time to Lesley Redden. Short was selected to the CIAU All-Rookie team. Scott Muscitt won the Mark Jeffrey Memorial Scholarship.

UNB played third place UPEI in the first round and got off on the wrong foot by dropping an 8-1 decision on the Island. Dax MacLean (3-1) and Bill Wright (2-2) led the Reds to a 9-5 home win in game two, but couldn't get the offense untracked and dropped the deciding match 1-0.

This was the year of the big scandal, as UDM went into UPEI and lost 3-2 in the opener, but attacked referee Ron Carragher at game's end, getting multiple suspensions and conceding the series to UPEI. The famous Ken Dryden report came about because of this game. UPEI dropped the the final to Acadia 2-1 and the Axemen won the National title in Waterloo, Ontario.

Ernie Fitsimmons, The History of Hockey in Fredericton: Volume 4 (pg. 282)

(note: the playoff series vs UPEI was V-H-H, UNB lost game three 1-0 at home).
