Danny Grant moved on after several great seasons coaching the Midget AAA team when he was named an Assistant Coach with UNB. In August he was named head coach after Mike Johnston left to become assistant coach with Team Canada.

The Varsity Red's losses included Trevor Boland, Ken Murchison, Rob Boldon, Mike O'Donnell and Mark Ross, along with goalies Mark Dawkins and Greg Reid. UNB brought in goalie Frank Leblanc who had been MVP of the Maritime Junior league with Antigonish to share minutes with Jason Payne. New players included twin brothers Luke and Ted Naylor, along with Todd Shupe, Wade Simpson and Bill Wright. Bob Naylor played with UNB (1961-65) and was father of the Naylor twins.

UNB had a great season (18-4-4) to finish first in the MacAdam Division, but they split three games with STU (3-3,4-5,7-4). Todd Sparks (29-23) had a great season and finished first in goals and third in points for the whole league, while Toby Burkitt (14-29), Derek Cormier (22-19) and defenseman Mike Cavanaugh (9-29) all had good years. Goalie Frank Leblanc was a 1st All-Star along with Cavanaugh, Sparks and Cormier. Leblanc and Sparks were also selected as All-Canadian players by the CIAU, even though he (Leblanc) missed some time with mononucleosis. Lesley Redden came in as backup and became the first female to play in a men's University game when she played twenty minutes against Mt. Allison giving up no goals.

The playoffs saw the 1st place Varsity Reds take on third place St. Thomas (11-12-3) in what was billed as their first playoff meeting ever. In game one, the Tommies pulled a suprise ny taking the game 4-3 on a Carlso Assayag overtime tally. UNB had 3 powerplay goals and St. Thomas 2.

Game 2 was also a close affair, with Derek Cormier scoring the the winner in a 4-2 UNB triumph that tied the series; the clincher saw a great performance by Tommies goalie Johnny Lorenzo as UNB outhsot STU 40-26 but lost 9-3. Derek Cormier (2-2), Karl Taylor (2-2) and Dan Sherstenka (1-2) were tops in those 3 games.

(correction: There is no 'u' in Cavanagh and it should be Carlos Assayag, not Carlso).
