UNB named PEI Junior coach Doug MacLean, who was an Assistant at London (OHL) in 1984-85 as their new coach. They lost top scorers Rob Graves and Mark Welton as well as top blueliners Scott Clements and Al Lewis and all three goalies. New players were Peter Thorne (14-21), Bruce Carroll (4-15), Dave Goodland, John Gravelle, Jamie Lehman, Renato Marino, Ed Trail, Terry Balcom, Dean Frost and Steve Tattersall. John Leblanc was heroic, leading the league in goals and points (38-26-64), bettering the single season goal record of 35 set by Greg McCullough in 1971-72. Despite outscoring any team-mate by 24 goals and 29 points, the big leftwinger was just a Second Team All-Star. He did win the Ken Corbett Award as top UNB Male Athlete and was selected as a CIAU All-Star. Ernie Fitsimmons, The History of Hockey in Fredericton: Volume 4

(note: John was not the AUAA Kelly Trophy winner as the league's MVP, that went to David Purcell of St.FX (33-25=58). John did win the CIAU Sullivan Award as the league's Player of the Year. Such a scenrio is no longer possible as only the four league MVPs are eligable for the Sullivan Award).
